Bed Log – 0.9m x 150mm x 75mm, Formula 7 Spec
This bed log is a small but essential timber component used in the end post assembly of timber post and tension mesh fencing. Its job is straightforward but critical: it sits beneath the brace pin, or prop, that runs diagonally between the straining post and the standard post in an end post assembly, and it stops that prop from sinking into the ground under load.
Without a bed log, the base of the diagonal prop can gradually work its way into the soil over time, especially in soft or wet ground. Once that happens, the prop loses its angle and effectiveness, the whole end assembly loses rigidity, and the fence line can go slack. The bed log spreads the load at the base of the prop and holds it at the correct level, keeping the end assembly stable and the fence properly tensioned for the long term.
Manufactured to Formula 7 spec
This bed log is manufactured from slow-grown imported redwood as part of our Formula 7 range, our heavy-duty preserved wood system built for demanding outdoor use. Formula 7 uses advanced treatment cycles designed for deep preservative penetration, so a bed log built to this spec is designed to hold up to years of contact with wet ground, without losing the strength needed to support the brace prop above it.
Why it's specified on TII drawings
Formula 7 spec bed logs comply with TII's (Transport Infrastructure Ireland) fencing standards and are called up on multiple TII standard construction drawings for timber post and tension mesh fencing, including drawing CC-SCD-00321, which sets out the detail for straining posts, end post assemblies and double end post assemblies used on national road schemes and infrastructure projects around Ireland.
On these drawings, the bed log appears within the End Post Assembly Elevation and Plan, positioned beneath the brace pin at the base of the prop, between the straining post and the first standard post. It works alongside the galvanised steel brace plate and brace pins to form a solid, engineered connection that keeps the end assembly square and properly braced.

Built for infrastructure and agricultural fencing contracts
Because this bed log is manufactured to Formula 7 spec, contractors can rely on it to perform for the full design life of the end post assembly, whether that's a stretch of TII road boundary fencing, a local authority contract or an agricultural fencing job specified to the same standard.
This makes it a straightforward, compliant choice for civil engineering contractors, fencing subcontractors and local authorities working to TII specifications, as well as for any project where an end post assembly needs to be built correctly the first time. Using a bed log that matches the size and spec called up on the drawing avoids queries at inspection stage and keeps the job moving without delays.
Where it's used
The bed log is used specifically within end post assemblies and double end post assemblies – the points where a fence line starts, finishes, changes direction by more than 10 degrees, or crosses a boundary. These are the highest-load points along any tension mesh fence line, which is why TII drawings specify a bed log at every one of them. If you are tendering for or carrying out fencing works to TII standard construction details, this bed log is the correct component to specify to stay compliant.
We supply this bed log nationwide across Ireland and can combine it with straining posts, standard posts, brace pins, brace plates and tension mesh to complete full end post assemblies for TII and agricultural fencing contracts.
