This
post and rail fence kit is a complete black timber fence, sold by the metre, for driveways, avenues, paddocks and boundaries. Each metre supplies 1.95m × 150 × 75mm Formula 9® posts and 100 × 47mm rails, giving a finished fence 1.35m above ground with 600mm below, at post centres of 2.4m or less. Order the total run you need and we work out the components for you. Minimum order is 5 metres.
Formula 9® timber is pressure-treated with a copper azole preservative in an oil-based carrier. The oil carrier makes the timber water-repellent and holds the preservative in the wood instead of letting it wash out, giving a 30–40 year design life in ground contact and a 30-year warranty against decay and insect attack. The deep black finish gives the traditional creosote look without creosote, chromium or arsenic — safe around children, dogs and livestock, and no painting or staining needed.
Built to the Department of Agriculture’s
S148 specification for horse boundary fencing, this is substantially heavier than a typical garden ranch fence — and eligible for TAMS III grant aid, with the fencing post certificate supplied. See our
full TAMS S148 fencing guide for the detail.
Where this post and rail fence kit is used
Homes, driveways and gardens
- Driveway and avenue fencing — the classic black post and rail run along an entrance drive, on either side or as a single boundary line.
- Front, side and rear garden boundaries where an open, non-solid fence is wanted rather than a wall or panel fence.
- Site and plot boundaries on one-off houses and rural properties, marking the line without blocking a view.
- Estate and parkland fencing for period properties, lodges and country houses.
- Screening a ha-ha, ditch or drainage line along a driveway or lawn edge.
- Replacing a rotted or creosoted fence — the black finish matches existing creosoted runs, so a partial replacement does not look patched.
Because this post and rail fence kit is built to an agricultural boundary standard, the posts and rails are considerably heavier than typical garden ranch fencing — 150 × 75mm posts rather than the 100 × 100mm or lighter sections usually sold for domestic use. It is a fence you fit once.
Farm, equestrian and TAMS projects
- Horse and pony boundary fencing — the 1.35m height and 3-rail layout specified in DAFM S148 clause F.2.1.1 for equine boundaries.
- TAMS III grant-aided fencing — posts from a manufacturer listed on S148A, supplied with a completed fencing post certificate.
- Stud farm perimeter and paddock division.
- Cattle and suckler paddock fencing where a solid timber barrier is preferred to wire.
- Yard and entrance fencing on farms and equestrian centres.
Please note: a fence within or bounding a garden or space in front of a house is only exempt from planning permission up to 1.2m. At 1.35m this kit exceeds that — to the side or rear of a house, up to 2m is exempt. See the planning question below. This kit is also not suitable for lunging rings or exercise arenas, which DAFM S156 requires at 1.75m and 1.4m on longer posts.

Post and rail fence kit questions
Can I use this post and rail fence kit along a driveway?
Yes. This is a popular choice for driveways, avenues and site boundaries, and it is built considerably heavier than typical domestic ranch fencing — 150 × 75mm posts and 100 × 47mm rails. The black finish suits both period and modern properties, needs no painting or staining, and weathers naturally to grey after three to six years if left.
Do I need planning permission for a 1.35m fence at my house?
It depends where it goes. Under Class 5, Part 1, Schedule 2 of the
Planning and Development Regulations 2001, a wooden fence within or bounding the curtilage of a house is exempted development up to 2 metres — but only up to 1.2 metres where it is within or bounding a garden or other space in front of the house. At 1.35m this kit exceeds the front-of-house limit, so it is normally used to the side or rear, along a driveway set back from the road frontage, or on agricultural land, where the 2m limit applies. Exemptions can also be lost where a fence would create a traffic hazard. If in doubt, check with your local authority planning office. This is general guidance, not planning advice.
Is the timber safe around children, dogs and horses?
Yes. Formula 9® is treated with copper azole in an oil-based carrier and is free of creosote, chromium and arsenic. Creosote was prohibited for purchase in fence posts and rails from 30 April 2023. The oil carrier holds the preservative in the timber rather than letting it leach out into soil or onto coats and hands.
Does the fence need maintenance, painting or staining?
No. The preservative is pressure-driven through the timber, not a surface coat, so there is nothing to re-apply. The deep black colour typically holds for three to six years and then weathers naturally to a silver-grey. If you want to keep it black you can apply a compatible exterior wood oil, but it is not required and does not affect the warranty.
Can I install this post and rail fence kit myself?
Yes, though the posts should be driven with a purpose-built post driver rather than hand-sledged. Many customers hire a contractor with a post driver for a half day and fit the rails themselves. Set posts at least 600mm into the ground at no more than 2.4m centres, fix the rails flush with the post tops, stagger the rail joints so only alternate joints land on the same post, and treat any cut end with two coats of a compatible preservative. Always cut the top of a post, never the base.
How many posts and rails do I need per metre?
For a 3-rail fence at 2.4m post centres: 0.42 posts, 0.63 rails and 3.78 screws per linear metre. Measure the total run in metres, excluding gateways, and order that many metres — we calculate and supply the components. Strainers, corner posts and gate posts are ordered separately. See the
full traditional post and rail system for the matching components.
Is this post and rail fence kit TAMS approved?
Yes. It is built to DAFM Specification S148 clause F.2.1.1 for horse boundary fencing, and McNamara Fencing is listed on
DAFM Specification S148A – Accepted Fencing Posts. We supply the completed fencing post certificate required with your grant claim.
How long will the fence last?
Formula 9® timber is designed for a 30 to 40 year service life in ground contact in Irish conditions and carries a 30-year warranty against structural failure from decay or insect attack, available on registration.
