Description

Post and Rail Fencing Built for Stud Farms and Rural Properties

Our Formula 9® post and rail fencing kit is a traditional four-rail timber fence designed for long service life, strength and a clean, classic appearance. It is a proven choice for stud farms, equestrian centres and private horse owners across Ireland, and it is equally at home marking the boundary, driveway or paddock of a rural house where a natural timber fence suits the setting far better than wire or steel.

The kit is sold per metre, so you order exactly the length your fence line needs — whether that is a short paddock division, a garden boundary or a full stud farm perimeter. Minimum order is 5 metres.

Why Choose Timber Post and Rail Fencing

Horses are hard on fencing. They lean, rub, crib and occasionally run into a fence line, so the material you choose matters. Timber post and rail fencing gives a solid, highly visible barrier that a horse can see and respect from a distance, which reduces the risk of injury compared with thin wire or tape systems.

The rails on this kit are fixed to substantial 150mm x 75mm posts, giving the fence the rigidity to stay straight and sound season after season with very little maintenance. Because every component is pressure treated timber, the fence resists rot and weathering in Irish conditions and ages to a natural silver grey that looks right beside a period house, a yard or an open field.

Built to TAMS Specification

Posts measure 1.95m x 150mm x 75mm and rails measure 4.8m x 100mm x 47mm. These dimensions match the boundary fencing requirements set out in the Department of Agriculture S148 specification for horse fencing under the TAMS 3 scheme.

Post and rail fencing for horses is listed as a grant eligible fence type under TAMS 3, so if you are preparing an application or drawing down an approved grant, this kit is specified to the correct sizes from the outset. Full specifications are available on the Department of Agriculture website.

If you are unsure which fence height or rail count your approval covers, send us your reference and we will help you match the correct kit before you order.

Installation and Spacing

Posts are set at approximately 2.4m centres, with rails overlapping at each post to create a continuous, rigid run. Posts should be sunk to roughly a third of their length, giving a finished fence height of 1.35m above ground once installed.

The kit is supplied ready to install, and most competent contractors or experienced landowners can erect post and rail fencing with standard tools. No specialist machinery is required beyond a post driver or auger for larger runs, which keeps installation costs down on longer fence lines.

What Is Included Per Metre

Each metre of post and rail fencing is calculated using our standard kit formula, so the quantities you receive are correct for any length ordered:

  • Posts per metre: 0.42
  • Rails per metre: 0.84
  • Screws per metre: 5.04
  • Finished fence height: 1.35m
  • Timber: pressure treated softwood
  • Minimum order: 5 metres

Simply enter the total number of metres you need and the components are calculated automatically at checkout.
