Drill Bit for Gate Hangers 22mm x 400mm | Long Auger Wood Bit

The Drill Bit for Gate Hangers 22mm x 400mm is a long wood auger drill bit designed specifically for drilling through timber gate posts when installing gate hangers. With a 22mm cutting diameter and 400mm overall length, this auger bit makes it easy to drill clean, accurate holes through deep timber posts for threaded gate hanger bolts and hooks.

This is the right bit for anyone hanging farm gates, field gates, or timber gates where you need to pass a gate hanger bolt through a thick post. The long 400mm length means you can drill through posts that would be too deep for a standard drill bit, and the auger design clears wood efficiently so the hole is clean and the hanger goes in smoothly.

Why use a 22mm auger bit for gate hangers?

Most threaded gate hangers have a bar diameter around 20mm to 22mm, so a 22mm auger bit gives you the right size hole for the hanger to pass through while still being tight enough to hold securely. Using the correct bit size:

  • Ensures the gate hanger bolt fits through cleanly without being too loose.
  • Reduces the need to force the hanger or re-drill the hole.
  • Helps you hang gates more quickly and accurately.
  • Prevents oversized holes that can weaken the post or make the gate sag.

For timber posts, an auger bit is superior to a standard wood bit because it cuts cleanly, removes wood efficiently, and doesn't bind as easily in deep holes.

Key benefits of the 22mm x 400mm auger drill bit

  • 22mm cutting diameter: Ideal size for most threaded gate hanger bolts and hooks.
  • 400mm overall length: Long enough to drill through deep timber gate posts that standard bits cannot reach.
  • Hex shank: Secure grip in any standard chuck drill, reducing slippage during drilling.
  • Carbon steel material: Hardened steel for durability and sharp cutting performance in wood.
  • Sharp carbon steel cutting edge: Cuts cleanly through softwood, hardwood, and treated timber.
  • Auger design: Clears wood efficiently for clean, accurate holes.
  • For wood drilling: Specifically designed for timber, fence posts and gate hangers.
  • Domestic / occasional use grade: Suitable for farm and DIY gate hanging tasks.
  • Product code: AUGER22MM: Easy to identify and order.

Used for gate hangers and fencing work

This auger bit is designed for:

  • Timber gate posts: Drilling through deep posts for gate hanger bolts.
  • Gate hangers: Installing threaded gate hangers, hooks, and drive/bolt hangers.
  • Fence posts: General wood drilling in fencing installations.
  • General woodwork: Any project where you need a clean 22mm hole in timber.
  • Softwood, hardwood and treated timber: Works in all common wood types used in fencing and gate building.

How to use this drill bit for gate hangers

When hanging a gate with threaded gate hangers:

  1. Mark the exact position for the gate hanger on the timber post.
  2. Insert the 22mm auger bit into your drill chuck and tighten securely using the hex shank.
  3. Drill through the post at the marked position, keeping the drill straight.
  4. For deep posts, drill steadily and allow the auger to clear the wood as you go.
  5. Once the hole is drilled, insert the threaded gate hanger bolt through the post.
  6. Secure the hanger using the supplied nuts and washers on both sides of the post.

For best results, use a cordless drill with sufficient voltage (12V, 18V or 20V) and adjustable torque. A higher voltage drill will make drilling through tough or treated timber easier.

Why this drill bit is essential for Irish farmers

In Ireland, where timber gates and field gates are widely used on farms, having the right drill bit for gate hangers is essential for efficient gate installation and maintenance. This 22mm auger bit is the correct size for most threaded gate hangers, and its 400mm length means you can drill through deep posts without needing to drill from both sides.

For farmers hanging new gates, replacing old gate hangers, or maintaining gate lines, this bit saves time and reduces the frustration of trying to use the wrong size bit. It gives you clean holes, secure hangers, and gates that hang properly without sagging.

Frequently asked questions

What size drill bit do I need for gate hangers?
For most threaded gate hangers with a 20mm to 22mm bar, a 22mm auger bit is the right size. This gives a clean hole that the hanger passes through smoothly while still holding securely.

Can I use this bit for metal posts?
No, this auger bit is designed for wood drilling only. It is not suitable for metal posts. For metal, you would need a metal drill bit such as a cobalt or carbide bit.

What drill should I use with this auger bit?
Use a cordless drill with 12V, 18V or 20V and adjustable torque. A higher voltage drill will make drilling through tough or treated timber easier.

Is this bit suitable for treated timber?
Yes, the 22mm auger bit is suitable for softwood, hardwood and treated timber commonly used in fencing and gate posts.
